| Suzanne Lacy, assisted by Susanne Cockrell, Gail Smithwalter, and Virgina Cotts (Staten Island, New York 1994) The seven cars of the series were shipped to the Snug Harbor Cultural Center as part of a retrospective on Lacy’s work on violence (from 1972-80). A tongue-in-cheek, two-week installation was created throughout Staten Island with five pink cars. Prior to the installation, several roadside locations sported an unusual urban project: wrecked cars with crude warning signs about driving and drinking. Each of these “installations” was signed by the local borough chief, Guy Molinari, kitch objects well known to Staten Islanders. Five of Molinari’s cars were commandeered, painted a flat bubblegum pink, and placed at strategic sites around the Island. The sign over each car was inscribed with crude warnings and statistics on the dangers of domestic violence.
