(Oakland, 1994)
As The Roof on Fire was being developed with Oakland teenagers,
violence surfaced as an important issue in the lives of several
of the young women students. Relating to their own experiences,
young women worked with graphic designers and artists to create
Signs of Violence, a set of authentic full scale street
signs, with text and images re-configured around themes of domestic
violence. Fabricated by the Department of Transportation, these
signs were exhibited at Snug Harbor Cultural Center as part of Lacy’s
retrospsective.
