Expectations, 1996–97

Expectations explored a spectrum of issues related to teen pregnancy through a summer art course for thirty-two pregnant and parenting teenagers, an installation, a symposium, and policy work. The class covered a different theme each week—autobiography, health care, relationships, employment and education goals, and public policy—and offered childcare, transportation, lunches, stipends, school credit, and instruction by professional artists. The graduation ceremony included commendations and speeches by local officials. During the art lessons students produced life-sized portraits of their experiences surrounding and during childbirth, which Lacy laboriously downsized from 4 feet to 4x6 inches, through zerox technology, for a suite of 30 drawings.
